Here is an update on the Whatsapp for Android 5.0 Lollipop fix for untimely notifications.
Google started rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop into user devices in the first week of April. Users expressed their frustration that a known bug related to ‘priority mode’ had not been fixed in the new release. The annoying bug was related to vibration and voice alerts notifications from Whatsapp not being silenced, even after the app had been taken off the priority list in the Android 5.0 Lollipop running device by users.
Google had positioned “Priority notification setup” feature as a tool which would allow only “alarms and specific notifications” from chosen apps to interrupt a user when the “priority” mode was activated. Users were given the option to designate their choice of apps and numbers which would feature in the priority list.
Google on its part had responded back to miffed users by claiming that the “Priority notification setup” feature was “working as intended” in the Android 5.0 Lollipop O.S. It went on to add that WhatsApp development team should address the complaints and find a fix for the mess up with their “Priority notification mode.”
It seems like the WhatsApp development team were more responsive than the engineers of Lollipop O.S. The recently released Whatsapp for Android 5.0 Lollipop (v2.12.38) has managed to finally fix this bug. The work around for the issue has been discussed below.
The engineers determined that the alert tones of WhatsApp were being played via the Android’s media volume control. In contrast, most other apps were using a “notification tone”. It was discovered that the “Priority Mode” feature was programmed to silence only the “notification tone” and was not rigged to silence the media volume control. This had practically rendered the Priority Mode useless on the Lollipop devices and users were forced to manually cut out the media volume too.
WhatsApp update, v2.12.38 has rooted out this bug and has made it possible for Lollipop powered devices to enable priority mode and avoid receiving notifications from the messenger app until or unless they have marked it as priority.
